  1. Hi I looked at your calendar. Can you provide information on what all those rides mean?
A lot of it is in code that I can’t figure out.

    1. Hi Claudia,

Thank you for asking. I am providing a summary of the rides below. The GCC refers to the German Cultural Centre (at the corner of Lorne Ave and Cartwright St.).
If you have any other questions please let me know. I can also be reached at communications@horizon100.com.

We would love to have you ride with us.

Lite rides are shorter rides that run every Monday and Thursday evening from May to August. These are designed to be welcoming to new cyclists with slower groups and extra support. These rides start at the German Cultural Centre (GCC) at 6:30 PM. More information is available at http://www.horizon100.com/?page_id=47.

Wednesday evening and Saturday morning rides are the main club rides. These leave from Rotary Park, at the south end of the Idylwyld Bridge. Riders complete a 50km route with an option of doing 100k on Saturdays. For more information visit http://www.horizon100.com/?page_id=71 and http://www.horizon100.com/?page_id=80.

Tuesday evenings the club runs an interval training workout called TNT. Participants will be given a defined workout of hard/easy intervals. These are a great way to build fitness. These rides start Tuesdays at 6:30PM at the German Cultural Centre. More details can be found here: http://www.horizon100.com/?page_id=77

FOG&G rides, short for “Fast Older Guys and Gals” run on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 9:30AM. These rides provide an opportunity for daytime riding with a group. These rides start at the German Cultural Centre.

          1. Hi Mallory,
The HYP program is the Horizon Youth Cycling program. It runs at the same time as the Thursday lite rides and offers young people between the ages of 10 and 16 the opportunity to learn group riding skills with other young people.

      1. I am just starting to bike so I am looking for a beginner group. I am 62 years old so The Faster Guys and Gals group seems like a good fit. However, the word Faster is rather intimidating. How fast does this group bike? How long? How far?

        1. Hi Dolores,

Thank you for getting in touch. We would love to have your ride with us.

As a rule of thumb, you should be comfortable riding at about 25km/h to ride with the FOGG group, or for the Wednesday or Saturday rides. The FOG&G ride leaves from the German Cultural Centre (Lorne and Cartwright) and goes to the Dakota Dune Casino and back, about 50km.

If you are unsure, we recommend attending one of our Monday or Thursday lite rides. These leave from the German Concordia Club at 6:30PM both Mon and Thurs. These rides are designed to get new riders comfortable with riding in a group, and we will teach you hand signals and other useful techniques.

While some riders stay with the Lite Rides, these are very good at getting riders ready to ride in groups that go a bit faster or longer (e.g. the morning FOG&G rides).

If you have any more questions, please leave another comment or get in touch by email at communications@horizon100.com.

Hope you have a great weekend.

          1. Thanks for the information. I definitely belong in the Monday or Thursday group. What kind of bike do most people ride?

          2. Hi Dolores,
Sorry for the delay in responding.
Most people will be riding road bikes, but if you are just starting a hybrid or city bike will do. Some folks even start with a mountain bike, but they will need to work harder to keep up with the group.
